Another space race: China & Russia vs. the USA

http://edition.cnn.com/2006/TECH/space/09/11/russia.china.moon.ap/ind…

Very likely.

I assume the China/Russia combination will try a manned lunar flyby before
the next US astronaut sets foot on the Moon again. After that, a Martian
flyby may be planned, putting them squarely ‘ahead’ (at least
psychologically) of the US. The US will undoubtedly respond with a manned
landing on Mars.

These ‘space races’ do have their merit as it pushes nations to try things
which wouldn’t otherwise be contemplated. If it wasn’t for Gagarin etc. I’m
pretty sure that no one would have walked on the Moon even now.

But the proof is in the pudding…so for now, we’ll wait and see.

J-Track 3D and station

I’ve fired up J-Tracker 3D for the latest mission, and I can’t find
"Station" in there, it used to be in the list of NASA satellites. Does
anyone know why they would have taken it out? Thanks

When Will We Be Able to Spot Planets with Oxygen?

Earth is the only planet we’ve discovered so far with oxygen because as
far as we know, the only way Oxygen can appear in a planets atmosphere
is as a bi-product of life.

Now, we’ve discovered other planets around other stars, but our
technology is really only at the point where we can see gas giants. But
if we develop our telescopes more, presumably we will eventually be
able to find other Earth-sized planets, as these are probably pretty
common.

http://www.universetoday.com/2006/09/08/earth-sized-planets-are-proba…

My question is, around what year do you think we will have developed
our telescopes enough to tell if those Earth-sized planets do or do not
contain oxygen?

On the Structure of Particles and the Nature of Nuclear Forces

This paper has proposed a theoretical idea to construct particles by
using electron, positron, neutrino and anti-neutrino as well as the
weak force interaction among them; it has theoretically estimated the
radii of neutron and proton as well as the range and strength of
so-called nuclear force, also has explained the reason for the feature
of saturation and short-range of nuclear force and various nuclear
reactions

OT: Tragedy Of The Century

I just heard on the teevee that Anna Nicole Smith has suffered from a
mammary loss.

The poor woman. First her son dies, and now this. The only thing that
she had going for her, really, was her mammarian endowment. How will
she get through life now?

[whisper, whisper]

What?

[whisper]

A *memory* loss?

Ummmm…

Never mind.

Do farts float longer in zero g and stink more?

Has any astronaut ever sat on the stool in zero g and then noticed one of
their turds accidently floated away like what happened to the bolts on the
spacewalks?  That would be embarrassing.

New mystery planet

http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=20819
So it’s far bigger than Jupiter, and far closer to its primary (type G)
than Mercury.
…and yet is incredibly low in density, although you would have thought
its atmosphere would have boiled off eons ago at that distance and heat.
And one of the advantages of growing up in a binary star system is an
intelligent species would have a sister solar system they could see in
action as soon as they got decent telescopes, and close enough at hand
to allow visits fairly early on, with a good chance that the sister
system might have habitable planets in it due to the similarity to its
star to theirs.
And this is the second time we’ve found one of these giant low-density
planets orbiting in close to its sun.
Now, if you were going to build something like a externally powered
mini-Dyson Sphere, you’d like all the solar power you could get- so
you’d stick it really near a star…. =-O

Oberg to speak on 'climate repair' at UT-Austin on September 27

Oberg to speak on ‘climate repair’ at UT-Austin on September 27
"Repairing the Biosphere: Human Protection of Earth’s Climate"

The issue of global climate change, and the human role in creating it and
solving it, has become one of the main themes of our generation. Separating
technology from politics, Oberg will assess the technological means by which
human civilization can affect regional and even global climate deliberately,
in an interventionist strategy to counter climatic deviations both natural
and human-induced. He will discuss both practical and philosophical angles
to human efforts to actively counteract natural disasters on all scales,
from earthquakes to atmospheric alterations to interplanetary threats, and
will offer an ethical basis (as well as a practical rationale) for such an
approach — while comparing the predicted effectiveness to today’s most
widely published proposals. A retired ‘rocket scientist’, author, and news
media consultant, Oberg (www.jamesoberg.com) is the author of ten books,
including ‘New Earths’ (1981), the first non-fiction treatment of
‘terraforming’, or climate engineering on other planets (and on Earth). He
and his wife Alcestis (‘Cooky’) Oberg live in rural Galveston County, Texas.

Sound of Trumpet Christian Morality: Bible-Toting Christian On Trial for SECOND RAPE

Yep, that vaunted Christian morality

http://www.courierpress.com/news/2006/aug/29/second-rape-victim-testi…

Jeffersonville, Ind. — The second woman Thomas N. Schiro is accused of
raping 25 years ago took the witness stand this morning, at the
beginning of the second day of the trial.

As he left the courtroom for a lunch break, Schiro carried a Bible in
his cuffed hands. When asked by a reporter if he is happy with the way
his trial is going, he replied, "I’d be happier if I was home."
